Software Engineer Resume: Template and Examples (2026)
A software engineer resume template you can copy, two fictional examples, section-by-section guidance, ATS-friendly formatting and the mistakes to avoid.
A software engineer resume has two readers, and you write for both. The first is a parser inside an applicant tracking system (ATS) that turns your PDF into fields so a recruiter can search and sort them. The second is a hiring manager who gives the page a short skim and decides whether to read the rest. This guide gives you a one-page template to copy, two fictional examples at different levels, advice for each section, and the formatting rules that keep both readers on your side.
If you are a student or a new grad with little or no work experience, read the computer science resume guide instead. That guide puts projects and coursework first, which changes the whole layout.
What a software engineer resume needs to do
A recruiter reads your resume (CV) against a posting. She wants four things on the first pass: your current title, your years of experience, your main stack, and the scale of what you have built. Give her those four in the summary and the first three bullets, and she reads on.
The parser reads the same page as text. It pulls out job titles, dates, skills and education, and it matches the skill names against the posting. If you write “k8s” and the posting says “Kubernetes”, a strict filter misses you. Our post on how resume matching algorithms work explains the keyword, semantic and structured layers in detail. For this guide, the practical consequence is simple: name your technologies in full, inside the bullets that prove you used them.
Software engineer resume template (one page)
Copy this into a text editor, a Google Doc, or a resume builder, and replace each bracket. The section order suits engineers with three or more years of experience. With less than that, move Education and Projects above Experience.

What goes where:
- Contact line. Plain text, in the body of the page. Skip icons and skip the page header, because some parsers drop headers. Write the GitHub and LinkedIn URLs as text so they survive a copy-paste.
- Summary. Three sentences at most. It is the only place a recruiter reads prose, so it carries your title, years, stack and scale.
- Experience. Reverse chronological. Three to five bullets for the current role, two or three for the previous one, one or two for anything older.
- Skills. Grouped lists. The parser reads them as a flat set of terms, so the grouping is for the human.
- Projects. Required under three years of experience; optional after that, and worth keeping if the project is live, has users, or shows a skill your jobs have not.
- Education. Degree, school, year. Add certifications here, with the full name and the acronym.
Software engineer resume examples
Both examples below are fictional. The names, companies and numbers are invented to show the shape of a strong resume at each level.
Example 1 (fictional): mid-level backend engineer

Each bullet in this example names a change, a measure and a method, and the technologies sit inside the bullets rather than in a list the recruiter has to cross-check. The summary gives title, years, stack and scale in two sentences. The skills section lists tools Priya could be interviewed on, grouped so a human can scan it in a few seconds.
Example 2 (fictional): senior full-stack engineer

The senior example adds scope to every bullet: team size, codebase size, dollar volume, user count. Leadership work that is not code (hiring, rubrics) gets one line, because a senior posting asks for it. The oldest job shrinks to a single bullet, and the Projects section is gone, since eight years of shipped work says more than a side project.
If you are a new grad
With no professional roles, the Experience section cannot carry the page, so the layout changes: Education at the top, then Projects, then internships. The computer science resume guide covers that layout with its own template and a fictional new-grad example.
How to write each section
Summary
Write it last, after the bullets exist, and keep it to three sentences. Sentence one: title, years, stack. Sentence two: scale or domain. Sentence three, optional: what you are looking for, phrased in the posting’s terms.
Weak: “Passionate software engineer with a proven track record of delivering scalable solutions in fast-paced environments.”
Strong: “Backend engineer with 5 years building event-driven services in Kotlin and Postgres for a logistics marketplace with 2M monthly orders.”
The weak version contains no searchable term and no fact a recruiter can check. The strong version names a language, a database, a domain and a scale in one line. Drop the objective statement; the posting is the objective.
Experience bullets that show impact
A bullet has four parts: a verb, the thing you changed, the measured result, and the method. The order can shift, but all four should be there for the bullets that matter.
“Responsible for backend services” fails all four tests. “Migrated three Django services to FastAPI, cutting p95 latency on the checkout endpoint from 900 ms to 310 ms” passes them.
Numbers come from places you already have: dashboards, incident reports, sprint reviews, before-and-after measurements you took while doing the work. If you have an estimate rather than a reading, write “about” and keep the number honest. If a bullet has no metric at all, give it scope instead: how many users, how many services, how many people on the team, how long it ran in production.
Two honesty rules. First, claim your part of a team result with the right verb: “led”, “owned”, “built”, “contributed to” each mean something different, and an interviewer will ask. Second, keep the number tied to work you can explain for ten minutes. A bullet you cannot defend in a technical interview costs you the interview.
Name the technology inside the bullet. The parser finds “Kafka” in a sentence as well as in a list, and the human reader gets proof you used it.
Skills
Group the list, keep it to tools you can be interviewed on, and match the spelling in the posting. “PostgreSQL” and “Postgres” are the same database to you and two different strings to a search filter. Our resume keywords guide covers how to pull the right terms from a posting and where to place them; this section only needs the structure.
Skip proficiency bars, star ratings and percentages. They parse as noise, and a recruiter cannot tell what “80% Python” means. Skip soft skills too. “Team player” in a list proves nothing; a bullet about the hiring rubric you wrote proves it.
Projects and GitHub
Include a project if it is live, has users, or demonstrates a skill your jobs have not. Write the URL as plain text. Give each project one or two bullets with the same verb-change-measure-method shape as your work bullets.
Make the repository worth the click: a README that explains what the project does and how to run it, a pinned position on your profile, and a commit history with your name on it. A recruiter who opens a repo with no README and one commit named “init” closes the tab.
Leave out tutorial clones and course assignments once you have professional work. A to-do app in React tells a hiring manager nothing new.
Education and certifications
Degree, school, year, on one line. A GPA helps for two or three years after graduation and then goes. Bootcamp graduates list the bootcamp here with the dates and the main stack.
Certifications go under Education with the full name and the acronym: “AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Associate (SAA-C03), 2025”. Recruiters search for both forms. List a certification only if it is current and relevant to the posting.
ATS-friendly formatting for a software engineer resume
The general checklist lives in step 5 of our guide to tailoring a resume to a job description. The points below are the ones that bite engineers in particular.
- One column by default. A two-column layout is fine only if the main content comes first in the file’s reading order. Test it: select all the text in the PDF, paste into a text editor, and check the order.
- No skill bars, charts or icons. They render as nothing or as stray characters once parsed. Contact details as plain text, with no envelope or phone glyphs.
- Standard headings. Summary, Experience, Skills, Projects, Education. A parser maps these to fields. “Where I’ve been” maps to nothing.
- Text-based PDF. Export from a word processor, LaTeX or a builder that prints real text. A PDF exported from a design tool as a flattened image parses as a blank page.
- Dates with months. “Jun 2023 to Present”. Year-only dates read as a gap you are hiding.
- Length. One page up to about eight years of experience. Two pages after that, if the second page is as dense as the first. A third page gets skipped.
- File name.
firstname-lastname-resume.pdf. The recruiter’s downloads folder is full of files calledresume.pdf.
If you want a builder that handles the formatting, Resume Matcher ships seven templates, including a LaTeX-style one, and each exports a text-based PDF printed by headless Chrome, so you can select and copy every word. The PDF templates page shows all seven. If you prefer real LaTeX, Jake’s Resume on Overleaf by Jake Gutierrez is a widely used single-column template, and its source includes a comment about keeping the generated PDF machine-readable.
Common software engineer resume mistakes
Duties instead of results. “Worked on the payments team” describes a seat. “Cut failed-payment retries by 31%” describes what you did in it.
Every technology you have touched. A skills list with forty entries signals that you cannot prioritise. List what you can be interviewed on today.
A buzzword summary. “Results-driven”, “passionate”, “proven track record” and “scalable solutions” take up the most valuable line on the page and say nothing.
Wrong length for your level. Three pages at four years of experience, or twelve years crammed onto one page in 8-point type. Both make the recruiter work harder.
Links that go nowhere. A GitHub URL with no pinned repositories, a portfolio that returns a 404, or a LinkedIn profile that shows a different title from the resume.
Inconsistent technology names. “Javascript”, “JavaScript” and “JS” on the same page look careless, and only one of them will match the posting.
Claiming the team’s number as your own. The interviewer will ask what your part was. Write the verb that fits.
Filler lines. “References available on request”, an objective statement, and a photo (for US, UK and Canadian applications) all cost space without adding information.
Tailor the resume for each job
A tailored copy beats a general one at the screen. The method is to keep one complete master resume, read each posting for its required skills and repeated terms, and cut a version that uses the employer’s own wording where your experience supports it. The full six-step process, with a worked backend example, is in our guide to tailoring your resume to a job description, and the resume keywords guide covers finding and placing the terms.
Resume Matcher, the free open-source tool I maintain, automates the cut. You run it on your own machine, connect the AI model you already use (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek or a local model through Ollama), and it rewrites your bullets in the posting’s wording while code checks lock your employers, titles, dates and degrees and revert any number the AI tries to add. Over 200,000 job seekers have used it. It tailors resumes; it does not scan them or predict what an employer’s system will do.
FAQ: software developer resume, SWE resume, developer resume
Is a software developer resume different from a software engineer resume? No. The two titles describe the same work at most companies. Use the title the posting uses, and keep your real title from the job so a background check matches.
How long should a SWE resume be? One page until about eight years of experience, two pages after that. Senior and staff engineers with long histories compress the early roles to a line each.
Should a programmer resume list every language I know? List the ones you could pass an interview in this month. Mention the rest only if a posting asks for them and you can relearn fast.
Do I need a cover letter? Few engineering roles ask for one. Google’s hiring page says the company does not require one and suggests spending the time on the resume instead (Google Careers, How we hire). Write one when the application form demands it or the role is unusual enough to need an explanation.
Which software engineer resume template is best? A single-column layout with standard headings, a real text layer, and the section order in the template above. The visual style matters far less than whether the content survives parsing and a quick skim.
Should a developer resume include a GitHub link? Yes, if the profile has something to show: pinned repositories with READMEs, or contributions to projects people recognise. An empty profile is worse than no link.
